Five Top Interior Design Trends for 2023

The New Year is always a good time to declutter; removing the Christmas tree and all the decorations and cards will allow you to take stock of your home and think about giving it a refresh. But what styles should you go for to ensure you are keeping up with the latest trends?

The Bespoke Shutter Company supply and install natural wood shutters in Herts, Essex, and north and south London. Here we gaze into our crystal ball and identify five of the likely top interior design themes for the year ahead, and why shutters are likely to form an integral part of several of them.

Wellness and Healing

It is important that your home is somewhere that you can relax, unwind and escape the stresses and strains of everyday life. As a result, you will likely see more plants used in homes this year. This is part of the trend towards biophilic design, which emphasises our connection with nature. Plants also help to improve air quality.

In the same way, soothing colours are predicted to be popular this year. With some interior design experts stating that browns and earthy shades are back in 2023 and others opting for ocean blue or wave patterns on wallpaper or artwork.

Heat and Light Control

The high temperatures the UK saw last year – 40C in some places – gave us first-hand experience of how the planet, and our homes, are heating up. At the same time, thanks to the rising cost of utility bills, householders are trying not to switch the lights or heating on unnecessarily, even in winter.

Window treatments can reduce the glare and heat. However, many experts are predicting more people will have shutters installed. This is because they can keep warm air out in summer, and retain heat in the winter, making them the perfect choice. Adjusting the angle of the louvres will also give you total control of how much heat, light and air gets in or out.

Sustainability

Allied to the need for effective heat and light control is the need to be more sustainable. Indoor wicker furniture is likely to enjoy a resurgence because it is light, durable and sustainable. The same applies to rattan, bamboo and cane. Aluminium in fixtures and fittings also helps here because, although it’s a metal, it’s easily recyclable.

Shutters, too, can be a key driver in this trend. Our natural wood shutters, which we supply and install in homes in Herts, Essex and London are made from natural, renewable and sustainably sourced wood.

An Increase in ‘Newstalgia’

This is a mixture, as the name implies, of the old and the new. So it’s all about giving antique or older pieces a fresh twist, or making retro designs work for a more modern aesthetic. Put some quirky bookends in a well-worn bookcase, or use plants to prop the books up. Alternatively try putting a sideboard in the bathroom, using it as a vanity cabinet instead for a more homely, less clinical feel.

Leaving No Stone Unturned

This trend may be less sustainable, but using stone and similar materials in interior design does have one big virtue, they are long-lasting and so won’t need replacing any time soon. This means stone coffee tables and cabinets in the kitchen and bathroom, as well as the use of concrete in the latter. Smaller statement pieces such as trays, candlesticks, lamp bases and bowls will also stand out in your living room, bedroom or kitchen.
