Why Shutters Make Sense on Boats and Houseboats
The cost of ever-increasing property prices in London and the South-East is spurring more and more people to invest in boats rather than bricks and mortar. Across the UK, almost 700,000 households are believed to have opted to set up home on the water, and a growing percentage of this figure can be attributed to houseboats.
As specialists in supplying and installing plantation shutters in Herts, Essex and North and South London, it’s our pleasure to assist owners of houseboats, yachts and other boats with shutters for their vessels. Here, we explain why we believe shutters are the ideal window covering.
There's Plenty of Privacy
If you own a houseboat, the last thing you will want when moored up is for people to be able to see you going about your household chores or having a shower! Shutters provide lots of privacy, which yacht owners will also appreciate.
Plantation shutters provide important protection too – and can prevent would-be thieves from peeking in when you’re not aboard.
They're Better than Curtains
Shutters will last far longer than curtains. They won’t fade as much as fabric nor be as adversely affected by water. Moisture created in kitchens and bathrooms as well as that from outside can be a problem on houseboats, making shutters a much better choice than fabric, which is prone to mildew.
Shutters are also much easier to clean, just needing a wipe with a cloth to remove dirt and grime that would be much more difficult to remove from any textiles.
Excellent Temperature and Light Control
It can get hot very quickly in summer below decks on a boat or houseboat and shutters help to keep the sun out while letting much-needed air in. Louvred plantation shutters provide the maximum amount of temperature and light control – adjusting the angle helps to ensure plenty of air can circulate without loss of privacy.
Shutters can also help to protect the skin from too much sun exposure, and they also reduce the risk of sunburn.
They Can Fit Any Shape
Most boats have portholes or other irregular window shapes (as pictured above). At the Bespoke Shutter Company, we can make a variety of shaped shutters. Our made to measure options can include octagonal shaped shutters, circular window shutters, and many others. The finish and perfect fit that can be achieved with bespoke shutters on irregularly shaped windows could never be accomplished with curtains or most types of blinds.
Whatever the shape of your windows, we can supply a blind to fit. We’re proud to say if there is a window that can’t be fitted with one of our shutters, we haven’t come across it yet!
They Look Stylish Too
Plantation shutters give a boat a look that is both stylish and highly individual. We can match shutters to many colour and interior design schemes.
Choose from our Boston, Phoenix and Vancouver wood colour ranges or our Farrow and Ball colours created to complement Farrow and Ball paint schemes but created using specially developed spray lacquers with UV inhibitors.
