Why Shutters are a Great Choice in your Bedroom
Although shutters are a stylish and practical choice for all the rooms in your home, this is particularly true for your bedrooms. Here The Bespoke Shutter Company, who supply and install full height shutters in homes and business across south London, look at how they function and why they are the ideal choice for certain groups of people.
How They Work
Unlike curtains and other coverings, shutters fit flush to the window, leaving no gaps. The panels (or louvres) which form part of the shutter can be adjusted so that you can still allow some light and heat into your room even if the window or windows are open.
At the opposite end of the spectrum, the louvres can also be adjusted to create an almost total blackout of light and noise. In terms of bedrooms, this is particularly beneficial for several groups of people, including:
Light Sleepers
Children and babies need more sleep on average than adults (adults 7-9 hours a night, children 9-13 hours, and babies 12-17 hours). Any parent will tell you that if a baby or small child has a problem sleeping, the chances are that they do too. Many adults are naturally light sleepers as well, particularly those suffering from medical conditions such as stress and depression.
Shutters are the best chance of a good night’s sleep for both young and old because of their ability to block out both light and outside noise.
Home Workers
More people are working from home than ever before, and they don’t always have the luxury of a separate study or spare bedroom to work in. This also applies to children who have been home-schooling or need a quiet place to read and study. Shutters allow people to work in peace without too many distractions.
Shift Workers
Even if you don’t have a sleep problem, because of the nature of your work (irregular hours, night shifts etc), you may find yourself needing or wanting some sleep in the middle of the afternoon or when other people are getting ready to go to work or school. Shutters will give you the best possible chance of getting some undisturbed sleep, no matter how busy or light it is outside – much more so than either blinds or curtains.
Anyone Who Likes Their Privacy
There is no disguising it, we spend more time undressed in our bedrooms than in any other room our homes (apart from maybe the bathroom). Therefore, privacy from potentially prying eyes is a requirement for most. Shutters provide much more privacy than both blinds and blinds and curtains.
This added privacy also applies to home workers who are working with business-sensitive documents or who simply do not like the idea of potentially being watched from outside.
Which Type do I Need?
If you want a total blackout, then it is best to opt for solid or full height shutters as these will cover more of the window, blocking out more light. These shutters will also maximise privacy.
You can also add a range of dark colours to your shutter, for insrance our Phoenix Wood Colour Range, which offers shades such as Black Walnut, Old Teak and Dark Mahogany - to complete the blackout effect.
However, these options (particularly solid shutters) may not give you enough flexibility and control if you would still like to have plenty of natural light in your bedroom. In which case you should consider café-style or tier-on-tier shutters. Both of these use more than one shutter to cover any given window which means you have much more flexibility over how much light you let in.
We have a range of lighter coloured shutters too, if you want to maximise the feeling of light in your room or those darker shades are not to your taste. You can view our full range of shutters here.
