What Colour Should My Shutters Be?

Window shutters have evolved from something which is purely practical into something that can be both functional and stylish. The earliest examples of shutters were the only way of controlling the amount of heat and light that entered a home because both glass and curtains weren’t affordable for ordinary people until the 17th century. These days you have a choice of internal and external shutters, along with plenty of colour options.

The Bespoke Shutter Company offer painted shutters in North and South London, Essex and Hertfordshire. Here we outline some of the possible colour choices, and the factors which could influence your decision.

White

This is the classic colour for most shutters, whether internal or external. It’s a nod to the original plantation shutters which were built in the southern States of America, usually in the estate farmhouse (hence the name). They were white because the colour was an excellent reflector of the heat and didn’t make rooms any warmer than they already were. Plantation shutters are now common in London and capitals all over the world as the style has caught on.

Although the originals in America were largely external shutters, these days shutters are more often than not positioned inside the house. However, white works well with any other colour scheme inside the house because it's neutral.

Off-White and Other Neutral Colours

To give a little bit of an interior design twist and avoid the décor becoming too bland or clinical, off-white is a sensible compromise. For instance, you could try something in cream or pearl. Something light and neutral will also emphasise the space in any room, particularly if it’s small to begin with. Neutral shades of blue work best in bathrooms.

As your personal tastes change over time, you can paint the other parts of the room a different colour, but you can rest assured that whatever you choose, any neutrally-coloured shutters will still match it.

Brown or Wood

These work well if you already have items of wooden furniture in the room in question, such as a wardrobe, dresser, or clock (as shown above). The same can be said if the shutters are being fitted inside wooden frames or window sills as it makes sense to try to match them.

There should be a number of shades available such as oak, walnut, teak or mahogany. It’s best not to overdo it either, as too much of one colour, particularly if it’s dark, can easily become overpowering. You also don’t want the room to be too gloomy, and you need to bear in mind that one of the big selling points of internal shutters is their ability to shut out light and heat.

All Things Bright and Beautiful

Occasionally, it makes sense to have something more vivid - for instance, in a child’s playroom or nursery. They will love the added attraction of a warm yellow or red set of shutters. Again, it could be matched with the furnishings in the room. However, it may be best to avoid coloured shutters in their bedroom since, as they grow older, their tastes may change just like those of an adult.

It’s also worth bearing in mind that colourful shutters will really make a statement to the outside world, despite being internal, as people will usually still be able to see them from the street. This means they could add to your property’s kerb appeal and, ultimately, selling price if you ever decide to move.
