Key Reasons to Choose Shutters for Patio and French Doors

Patio and French doors have been among the more popular home improvements of the past few years, as people like the idea of having an uninterrupted view of their own back garden and the world beyond. However, this can create some challenges when it comes to making sure your home is safe and secure, as well as regulating the temperature when they are open.

The Bespoke Shutter Company supplies and installs plantation shutters to homes in and around London. Here we look at why shutters are an ideal solution, whether you are fitting them to French doors (which open on hinges) or patio doors (which slide along tracks).

Maximum Flexibility

The problem with shutters on doors that look out onto your garden is that you want to be able to enjoy the view, particularly in summer. However, when the weather is at its hottest, you may not want them open all the time because of the extra heat the summer sun will generate in your home.

Shutters offer maximum flexibility. They can cover individual doors or panes of glass and can be operated independently of one another. They can be fully opened in a horizontal mode, or fully closed in the vertical, or somewhere between these two extremes, allowing you to control the amount of light entering the room. Alternatively, you can have tracked shutters that slide on rails and can be easily folded away to one side, which we would recommend for larger window openings.

We know that French and patio doors come in all shapes and sizes. That is why our shutters do too. If there is a shape we can’t fit a shutter too, then we haven’t found it yet.

They Can Match Existing Décor

Shutters don’t need to look out of place with your existing colour schemes. At The Bespoke Shutter Company, we offer painted shutters to all our customers, whether you are in south London, north London, Essex or Hertfordshire. We can stain or paint them to any colour of your choice.

Alternatively, you can make them a completely different colour to add an additional point of interest. Either way, they can make a stylish design statement. Some clients even like to use them to cover up unsightly door handles or window frames as well.

For Low Maintenance

This is important as patio and French doors will have a lot of traffic through them compared to conventional windows, which means an increase in dust, dirt and grime.

However, shutters won’t need much more than an occasional wipe down or dusting to keep them in pristine condition. They are also durable as well, which is another important consideration when they are exposed to a lot of heat and light as well as the comings and goings of people in your home.

For Safety and Security

Patio and French doors can be a tempting target for thieves, because of the large expanses of glass giving them a full view into your home. However, shutters (particularly full-height ones) give you plenty of safety and security, especially when fully closed, either at night or during the colder winter months.

Many people like to leave their French or patio doors open, while leaving the shutters closed. This helps with ventilation again, and also encourages pets and young children to stay where they are, whether it’s indoors or outdoors.
