Why Fit Shutters in Your Attic or Loft Conversion?
Interest in attic loft conversions has surged in recent years, with the number of internet searches for the terms peaking during the recent coronavirus lockdowns. During these periods, people needed extra space to work from home (or had much more time at home to carry out large-scale DIY projects). Loft conversions are still a hot topic when it comes to home renovations.
The Bespoke Shutter Company supply and install made to measure shutters in south London, other parts of the capital, as well as Essex and Herts; here we look at why shutters should form an integral part of any attic or loft conversion project.
The Versatility of Shutters
Windows in attics can often be oddly shaped and built into the rafters of a structure. This means that you may struggle to get curtains or blinds or other window treatments which fit these unusual openings.
However, that’s not the case with shaped shutters which we at Bespoke Shutter Company can fit. We can proudly say we haven’t yet found a window we can’t fit a shutter to,– and all our shutters are individually and precisely made to measure, so you can be sure they will fit your loft windows exactly.
We can supply half round, quarter round, circular, triangular and octagonal shaped shutters.
It Avoids Claustrophobia
Roof spaces can be small and claustrophobic, and space will be at a premium if you convert your loft into a bedroom or office space. One way of avoiding this is to fit a window (with shutters), which will ensure you don’t feel ‘trapped’ in any way and will also help you get regular fresh air into the new conversion.
It will give you a window on the world without compromising on your security – you can close the louvres or panels at night when you either aren’t using the loft or attic, or if you or a family member is sleeping there.
Heat and Light Control
Lofts and attics can sometimes feel like a sauna, as hot air rises through any building – and heat can easily get trapped under the roof with no means of escape, unless you have a window.
Heating and cooling an attic or loft could be expensive if the space is not always fully used, and controlling temperature with standard window treatments is not always an option either.
However, window shutters enable you to control temperature with ease and without increasing monthly energy costs – they can keep the warm air out in summer, and in during the winter – and whatever you have (such as furniture or other stored items) in there won’t be damaged by any extreme temperatures.
Shutters Are Easily Cleaned
Again, the relative inaccessibility of a loft or attic, and the fact that it may not be used all the time, isn’t a problem if you have shutters fitted. All they need is an occasional wipe-down or brush-down, which is handy if you don’t want to go up there all the time.
For a deeper clean, you may need a vacuum or a damp cloth, but this shouldn’t be necessary all that often. Curtains, on the other hand, may need regular dry cleaning (as they can be repositories for dust, dirt and grime).
They Can be Stylish Too
When you create a modern attic room with window shutters, there’s plenty of choice when it comes to style, even if there isn’t much space. You could go for shabby chic, industrial style, light or retro – for more details check out our previous blog post here.
Whatever style you go for, you shouldn’t have any problem finding the appropriate shutter colour – while white may be the most popular choice downstairs, because it’s so neutral, you can be more imaginative in the attic or loft.
At the Bespoke Shutter Company, we stock a wide range of colours – check out our range here. Like your loft conversion, adding window shutters should also add extra value to your home should you ever decide to sell.
