Plantation shutters

Plantation shutters are louvered panels fixed either inside or outside windows and doors. They originated in America and the West Indies and date back to before the American Civil War. The Bespoke Shutter Company based in North London specialise in Ante Bellum (meaning pre-war) plantation shutters.

Our range of Plantation shutters includes full height shutters, cafe style shutters and tier on tier shutters. Read below for more information on each of these different styles.

Full Height Shutters

Full height shutters are window shutters that cover the length and breadth of the window. They are the simplest style of window shutters and create a clean, elegant effect.

Full height shutters are ideally suited to all rooms in the home, as well as used to cover patio and sliding doors, and as room dividers.

Café style plantation shutters

Café style louver shutters are a cost effective way to add shutters to your home. Originating from French cafes, they were used to create a cosy, private dining experience for occupants, whilst still allowing plenty of natural light to enter the room. Today they are often used in kitchens and living rooms for much the same reasons, and offer a chic alternative to net curtains. They work equally well in commercial premises such as bars, cafes and restaurants.

Café style plantation shutters are available in both louvered and solid panel styles, and come in a range of finishes including natural wood and painted.

Tier on Tier Shutters

Tier on tier shutters are a popular choice of plantation shutter due to their versatility. Tier on tier shutters consist of two sets of shutters, one above the other. This allows for each to be open or closed independently of the other – giving you great control over light levels and privacy.

Tier on tier shutters are available in all of our styles except the Seattle range. Ideally suited to this design is the Phoenix hardwood range, which is light in weight, strong and durable. The phoenix is a hardwood with a rich textured grain that looks fantastic in a wide range of finishes. This range comes in a choice of 7 white colours and 17 stains and coloured finishes  - to help you create the ideal choice for your home.

This style is often chosen for Victorian and Edwardian houses where privacy is required without compromising on light
