Wooden Shutters

Open up any glossy home decor magazine and you’ll see them; beautifully arranged room sets with contemporary furniture and co-ordinating fabrics and in the background, completing the picture with their clean, straight, simple lines, a stylish set of interior wooden shutters.
Whether it’s our changing climate or our hankering after all things European, there is an increasing trend towards the installation of plantation shutters and solid shutters. And when you consider the benefits, it is hardly surprising. Wooden shutters provide control over lighting levels, they assist with ventilation and they help with privacy and noise reduction. They are extremely hard wearing, look fabulous, easy to maintain and very long lasting.

The benefits of wooden shutters explained

Light Control

You can control the level of lighting in a room very simply with wooden shutters. Plantation style wooden shutters consist of wood or polymer coated slats arranged horizontally such that when in the upright or closed position, they reduce light entering the room. The amount of natural light allowed into a room increases as these slats are moved further towards the flat or open position.
Solid wooden shutters on the other hand, are constructed with solid vertical panels. They offer less control over light levels than the louvered shutter style, but can create near black out conditions when fully shut. This is perfect for bedrooms of light sleepers or people who regularly need to sleep during the day.

Ventilation

Ventilation can be equally well controlled in much the same way. Windows can be left open and yet with shutters closed or partially opened, you can moderate any breeze. In this way you can benefit from the admittance of fresh air without having to deal with the effects of strong winds.

Privacy and Security

With privacy and security in mind, wooden shutters whether plantation style or solid, offer perfect but quite different solutions. Plantation shutters are ideal in that their horizontally arranged, tilting slats, will obscure a person’s line of sight making it impossible for them to see into the home. Solid wooden shutters, as the name suggests, create a solid wall of wood when closed, making it possible to quite literally, close down a home if it is to be left unattended for any length of time. They also provide an extra layer of protection making it harder for intruders to break into a home.

Noise Reduction

In situations where road noise or noises from the general public are an issue, for example alongside busy roads or above popular bars and restaurants, both plantation style and solid wooden shutters can be very effective. In the closed position they will noticeably reduce any incoming noise level.

Easy Maintenance

Maintaining your wooden shutters could not be simpler. All that’s necessary is a quick wet and dry wipe down from time to time. Once every couple of months or so, go over them with a damp cloth and then wipe them dry, your wooden shutters will come up as good as new. Even in the worst case scenario, where they have been left for a while due to a house sale or a prolonged holiday, a little bit of elbow grease will do the trick.
Their longevity is due in no small part, to the materials used in their construction. Hewn from hardwoods such as Cedar and Basswood or crafted from engineered woods, which are then given a polymer coating, these beautiful additions will compliment any home and with the proper care, will continue to do so, for many years.

Increase Your Home’s Appeal

Whatever your reasons for wanting to upgrade your current window coverings to wooden shutters, whether you are giving your home a timely and loving make over or sprucing it up for resale, you’ll be glad you did. The instant enhancement wooden shutters provide, will make you fall in love with your home all over again or, will add so much to its curb appeal that someone else will.
